The Phillips head screw was invented because early 20th century assembly machines had a hard time interfacing with a typical slot-had screws.

Enter Canadian born inventor P. L. Robertson who invented a self-centering cross shaped screw design. Mr. Robertson was unsuccessful in persuading industry executives of the benefits of his design. So, he sold his patent to Henry F. Phillips who refined the design, obtained fresh patents and saw his namesake screw adopted by General Motors in 1937 to build Cadilacs.
